A SATURDAY MORNING DATE

City Life, Familymomointhe62 Comments

vsco-photo-4 THIS WEEKEND SAM and I had a day date. It was the first time I can remember that we have had a good chunk of the day to ourselves and let me be the first to say #daydatesforthewin. Don't get me wrong, evenings out with Sam are always a great time and beggars-can't-be-choosers, I will take any opportunity I can to have some quality time sans bébé with him, but to have a whole morning and afternoon of time alone was bliss. Evenings can be hard to get the quality time in, since we are both usually mentally and physically drained from a long day at work or a full day at home with a one year old. The past few weeks have been particularly long and tiring, so when my mom called and asked to take Phineas to the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair at the Exhibition this week we did not hesitate to give a resounding "Yes!".

vsco-photo-1 3We started our morning with a trip to Bonjour Brioche, a Parisian style patisserie in the neighbourhood that has been voted the best brunch in the city and best croissant in the city. We have stopped in for their croissants and baguettes in the past but hadn't made it there for brunch yet. Let me tell you, it did not disappoint! We went big. We started with almond croissants and a warm drink, latté for him, hot chocolate for me. Then came the eggs benny. Anyone who knows me knows that, although I am not a huge breakfast person, I love eggs benedict. They serve their eggs benedict on their award winning croissants with peameal bacon or smoked salmon. Avocado and tomato are optional, but, I mean, who says no to avocado? Then we finished with a crème brulée tart which was devoured so quickly there was no chance of a photo being taken. I highly recommend going here if you are looking for a delicious brunch. Come before 11am though, otherwise the lineup goes around the block!

vsco-photo-2 2Our focus for the morning was to aim to do things that we couldn't do with Phineas. We realized that only things we both wanted to do were eat a meal with no distractions and great conversation, sleep and read, things that are are difficult impossible to do with a baby. So eat, sleep and read we did! We napped off our giant brunch for an hour or so and then made our way to Dark Horse Espresso Bar to finish our morning with quality time of reading in silence beside each other over a delicious cup of coffee.

It was the perfect morning and the best way to refresh before another busy week. I am definitely hoping to incorporate more day dates in the future, like I said before... Day dates for the win!

EVERGREEN BRICKWORKS

A FEW WEEKS ago Sam finished his day earlier than we anticipated which left us with an afternoon together as a family in a new-to-us city wondering what to do. Sam had been recommended to check out the Evergreen Brickworks. What a fabulous place! Formally a brick masonry, they have restored the deteriorating heritage buildings and created an environment that showcases green design and urban sustainability. Not only is this place beautiful with so much to see, it is also incredibly kid friendly.

Located near the Don Valley Parkway there are 40 acres of green space (formerly a clay and shale quarry) that is maintained by Toronto Parks, Forestry and Recreation with trails and ponds to explore. Finny saw his first turtle here!

There are farmer's markets on the weekend, an adorable café with delicious homemade buttermilk biscuits (get them, you won't regret it), a boutique shop with tons of great things for kids and adults alike, an ice rink in the winter, and a children's garden + so much more! We only spent 3 hours there and barely scratched the surface of all there is to do.

HALLOWEEN

City Life, Familymomointhe6Comment

HALLOWEEN WAS A full on family day in our home this year. We started the morning off with a long walk to the St. Lawrence Market (more on that later) and came home and carved our pumpkin before the evening festivities began! Last year Finny was only one month old so we didn't even attempt to do anything Halloween-y since we were spending a month living at my in-laws with a newborn. This year, now that we are settled in our home and our neighbourhood is super family friendly, we decided to go big! Finny was pretty interested in the pumpkin carving, although as soon as I started making chili and cornbread mid-carve he was only happy to be in my arms and in the cooking action... a little chef in the making! vsco-photo-3

He was so interested the pumpkin guts. Such an interesting experience for him with new textures and smells and flavours! He was quick to learn that pumpkin seeds go in the mouth.

The final product! We decided to go with a silly pumpkin this year to keep things light ;) A few years from now and I'm sure we'll be attempting to make the scariest pumpkin on the block!

Processed with VSCOcam with a5 presetIt was a Halloween safari in our house this year! Have you ever seen such a cute giraffe? He was not interested in his costume while we were at home (so this was the best picture we could get). He got more into it once he saw other kids in costume and he especially got into it when he realized that you get lots of food and treats for knocking on people's doors!

We had heard our neighbourhood was a busy one for halloween (our friends two blocks over get more than 300 kids every year) so we bought about 400 pieces of candy... Unfortunately since we live on a quieter street we only ended up having 3 kids come around. We now have enough candy to last us till next Halloween (too bad it doesn't keep that long!)

Hope you all had a wonderful Halloween!

A RAINY DAY IN THE CITY

City Lifemomointhe61 Comment

Processed with VSCOcam with t1 preset WEDNESDAY TORONTO HAD a "fall storm" alert, which meant that it was wet and miserable and cold outside all day long. I woke up dreading the idea of a day stuck at home, assuming it was going to be terrible with lots of tears and whining and yet it turned out to be one of our best days yet!

Finny woke up in a wonderful mood and we spent the morning cozied up in our jammies in bed and then enjoyed some oatmeal and raspberries for breakfast. After breakfast I started to prep a meal I've been meaning to cook for a dear friend who just had a baby and moved homes. Finn has taken a real interest in food and cooking and I try to encourage it and allow him to participate and "help"or at least sit on the counter to see what is going on as much as possible. He sat with me as I prepped and sautéed veg and was always willing to taste test to make sure the ingredients were up to snuff! ;)

He has inherited my love for carbs and chowed down on a quarter of a loaf of foccacia with his butternut squash soup for lunch. After lunch we played with his toys and had a solid game of chase around the apartment before baking dairy-free pumpkin cookies together before our play date with friends. (recipe to come) Who knew a rainy day with a one year old could be so fun!

21 WEEKS AND A FASCINATOR

City Life, Familymomointhe6Comment

YESTERDAY I HAD the privilege of attending the wedding shower of one of my oldest friends. We had high tea at a beautiful old golf course nearby and showered her with love and gifts. The venue is a particularly special place for me since I spent every Sunday of my childhood there having lunch after church with my family and grandparents. Back to the shower. I love to party, I love to socialize, I love to celebrate life, people and momentous occasions so when the invitation told us to come for high tea, to celebrate someone I love, AND wear a fascinator, there was no way I was missing it. It was a beautiful shower and such a great day spent with women I have known my whole life and eating delicious food. Good company and good food, I tell ya... it makes the world go round.

I WROTE TO THE ZOO TO SEND ME A PET

City Life, Familymomointhe6Comment

FINNY'S CURRENT FAVOURITE book is "Dear Zoo" by Rod Campbell. He loves to pull down the flaps and hear us pretend to be the animals behind them. In fact, Finny loves all animals (something he inherited from his mother ;) ) and gets so excited whenever he sees a dog or a cat or any other animal outside. Since he loves animals so much, and since Sam had the week off of work last week, we figured it was the perfect time to bring him to the zoo. He is finally old enough to see the animals and begin to recognize them as creatures. It was the perfect fall day with crisp air and the leaves had begun to change colours and Finny loved it. He was so excited to see all the animals, especially the hippo and the lions. His favourite animal though, was the warthog. He laughed and sniffed and snorted his nose playing along with us as we pretended to be warthogs.

The Toronto zoo is really an incredible place, there is so much to do and see and it has a great combo of education and fun for adults and kids alike.
